CDR Policy Scoop SHOWDOWN: Should Europe put BioCCS first in its CDR strategy?

Should Europe put BioCCS first in its CDR strategy?

Time for the next CDR Policy Scoop SHOWDOWN, back live on stage at Carbon Unbound Europe. And this promises to be a spicy one.

It is becoming increasingly clear that Europe’s CDR strategy is almost exclusively focused on BioCCS. Proponents argue that this is the quickest and most efficient path to scale. Opponents argue that it locks us into a single approach and goes against the ambition to promote all CDR technologies.

Sounds like a perfect recipe for a debate.

We're thrilled to be hosting this feisty discussion live on stage at Carbon Unbound Europe in London this October.

The motion: "Europe's CDR strategy should put BioCCS first."

Arguing in favour of the motion: Kaja Voss, CEO and Founder of Inherit - the first company in Europe to remove CO2 through BioCCS - arguing that BioCCS is the pathway Europe should be going all-in on.

Arguing against the motion: Alastair Collier, Chief R&D Officer from A Healthier Earth - one of Europe’s leading biochar project developers - making the case for tech neutrality and a broader mix of removal pathways.

Co-host Eve Tamme will moderate as the two sides go head-to-head to keep things punchy, informative, and entertaining.

Expect sharp arguments, live audience interaction, and fresh insight into where Europe should really be placing its bets on carbon removal.

We need the audience to ask the tough questions, and most importantly, to vote to declare the WINNER of this CDR Policy Scoop’s SHOWDOWN debate.

2026 Summit Themes

Explore the critical pillars shaping the future of carbon removal in Europe.

Honest Lessons from the Frontlines

Moving beyond polished success stories to share the failures, bottlenecks, and hard-earned lessons shaping the future of carbon removal.

The Buyer Intention Gap

Thousands of companies have net-zero commitments. A fraction have purchased a single tonne of carbon removal. This session gets inside the organisation - CFO objections, procurement barriers, board risk appetite, and standards confusion - to ask what it actually takes to move a corporate buyer from intention to purchase order.

Who Sets the Rules? The New Premium Standard for [EU] Certified Removals

From COP31 and the CRCF to SBTi, VCMI, ICVCM, CSRD, and the EU Buyers’ Club, the rules for carbon removal are rapidly evolving. Explore how companies can navigate emerging standards, manage risk, and build credible procurement strategies.

Trust Is the Product: Why MRV Will Make or Break the CDR Market

We move beyond methodology to ask the harder question: who bears the cost of verification, who sets the standard, and what does genuinely scalable MRV infrastructure look like for a market that needs to reach gigatonne scale?

Flight Path to Net Zero: Aviation's Carbon Horizon

With free EU emission allowances ending in 2026, airlines must now pay for all pollution. This financial shift has turned aviation into a primary driver of demand for permanent carbon removal.

Unlocking Commercial Markets in the Global South

As project development accelerates across Africa, Latin America, and Asia, how can buyers, investors, and developers create the long-term demand signals, offtake structures, and financing mechanisms needed to scale deployment and attract capital?

De-risking Carbon Removal Offtakes: Finance, Insurance, and Bankability in Practice

How are lenders, insurers, and investors reassessing offtake agreements in carbon removal, and what new risks, standards, and structures are needed to make long-term carbon removal contracts truly bankable?
