Agricultural processing giant ADM has announced plans to enter the voluntary CDR market with credits generated by carbon capture operations at its corn processing complex in Columbus, Nebraska — the world's largest bioethanol carbon capture facility, with over 800,000 tonnes of annual removal capacity. Biogenic CO2 captured from ethanol fermentation is transported by Tallgrass to the Eastern Wyoming Sequestration Hub for permanent underground storage. Credits will be certified by Puro.earth under its Geologically Stored Carbon methodology, with initial issuance expected before year-end following audit completion and a 15-year crediting period thereafter.

The company expects to issue around 80,000 tonnes of Isometric-certified reforestation removal credits before the end of 2026, following an early delivery to Google and McKinsey from its first fund.
Washington state carbon market moves toward formal linkage with California and Quebec at $32 per tonne
Washington Governor Bob Ferguson and California Governor Gavin Newsom announced plans to formally link Washington's Cap-and-Invest programme with the California–Quebec Western Climate Initiative. The most recent Washington auction cleared at $32 per tonne, essentially at parity with the WCI price of $32.48, making linkage economically straightforward and creating what would be the largest multi-jurisdictional carbon compliance market in North America, covering a combined economy of over $5 trillion.
Canada launches Article 6 ITMO policy framework to open domestic carbon removal credits to international buyers
Environment and Climate Change Canada has released a framework for trading internationally transferred mitigation outcomes under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, opening a formal policy route for Canadian companies to sell verified carbon removal credits to foreign governments and international corporations. Five European CDR associations call for four amendments to EU ETS carbon removal proposals
Five European CO2 removal associations have released a joint statement welcoming the European Commission's July 2026 proposal to integrate permanent carbon removal into the EU Emissions Trading System, while urging four key design changes to ensure the framework can meet its target of 250 million tonnes of CDR by 2040 — rising to 48 million tonnes annually. The statement focuses on procurement certainty, price support mechanisms, eligibility criteria, and governance structures needed to make the EU ETS revision commercially bankable.
Relae and Microsoft publish sixth edition of CDR quality criteria, adding delivery risk assessment for the first time
The 2026 Criteria for High-Quality Carbon Dioxide Removal, released by Relae (formerly Carbon Direct) in collaboration with Microsoft, introduces a delivery risk framework alongside updated quality standards — addressing for the first time the distinct problem of whether a high-quality project will actually generate credits on time and at the committed volume. The TECOP framework covers technical, economic, commercial, organisational, and political risk factors, giving CDR developers, investors, and buyers an integrated benchmark for both quality and delivery.
